I love, love this story. It was such an exciting fast pace read. There were situations that tugged at my heart strings and made me want to cry. This book covered so many things and issues teens deal with such as self-esteem, name calling.

At times I just wanted to reach into the book and hug Bianca. I mean seriously someone can only deal with so much in their lives before they crack. The two main characters were so real I felt as if I could have been either of them like my life was being read back to me.

You don’t realize how it sometimes hard to deal with the situations you face and sometimes running and not facing your issues seem so much easier. But, in reality they never go away sometimes they just get worse.

Take a cynical character, toss her world upside down and see how she deals with it. She’s very vivacious and a strong character and I loved being able to see that she had weaknesses too, this is what made her so realistic to me. In everyone and everything there is always some good and sometimes you are lucky enough to find it.

This is a book that I wished I didn't wait so long to read but I am definitely going to dive right into Shut Out now. This book is about finding yourself and realizing that it’s okay to sometimes need someone to confide in, that it’s only human to show your weaknesses.


Thank you Ms. Keplinger for writing such an honest and heartbreaking real story.

10 Surprising Things About the Author

1. I am obsessed with all things cinnamon. It began with cinnamon Jolly Ranchers when I was a kid, and has now progressed with a fascination with the different types of cinnamon. I especially love Vietnamese cassia.




2. I love to travel, and while I have been fortunate enough to explore a lot of the world, I still have Egypt, Jordan, Israel, and the Arctic regions -- not a shocker given the RELIC setting -- on my bucket list.




3. I met my husband in the Hong Kong airport. When we tell people that we met on line, they always assume we mean over the internet -- but we actually mean on the passport control line!




4. I was a lawyer for over a decade, and -- who knows? -- may one day return to the practice of law.




5. I am the oldest of six children; my brothers and sisters live all over the country, and I’m inspired by their varied life choices.




6. When I’m writing, I have to listen to the same music over and over; I really can’t deviate. For RELIC, I listened to Coldplay’s Mylo Xyloto and Mumford & Sons’ Babel so many times I lost count. I’m transitioning my music for the sequel to RELIC because I really can’t listen to either album again.




7. I adore museums, and one of my favorite places in the world is the airy room that houses the Ancient Egyptian Temple of Dendur in the Metropolitan Museum in New York City, where I used to live. When I really need inspiration for my writing, somehow this place does the trick. 




8. I enjoy scuba diving. I got certified on Australia’s Great Barrier Reef, and the most spectacular place I’ve ever done dives is in the ocean around the Fijian island of Savusavu.




9. My favorite season is fall, probably because I love all thing pumpkin -- pumpkin lattes, pumpkin bread, pumpkin soup -- and the changing of the leaves, of course.




10. I have always wanted to be an archaeologist (maybe that’s not so surprising given that Eva in RELIC is one!).

When I found out Nerissa had asked me to cast the characters of In Search of a Love Story, I had to laugh. Nerissa had no way of knowing it, but this is my favorite game to play! Seriously, my best friend and I have spent HOURS facebook chatting about how we would cast my books and sending each other pictures of all of our choices. These are the actors I’ve narrowed it down to. I would love to hear from readers of the book—do you think I’ve made the right choices? Who would YOU pick?

Emily:

Emily is tall, blond, and athletic. She’s beautiful and in great shape. She looks great all dressed up but can also rock a pair of sweats and a t-shirt. I picture her as a Blake Lively type.

 

 

 

Ashley:

Emily’s best friend Ashley is a little bit shorter with a sweet face and brown curly hair. She works as a kindergarten teacher, is very kind, and loves everything to do with romance. I think Sarah Ramos is super cute and is pretty much just how I picture Ashley.

Ryan:


Ryan is one of Emily’s best friends. He’s very stylish and very good looking. He helps Emily get in touch with her romantic side and helps direct her “makeover.” I see Ryan played by Michael B. Jordan.

Chris:


Ashley’s boyfriend. Chris is somewhat nerdy looking but very cute. He’s most comfortable in cargo pants and a hoodie and does research at a university. Andrew Garfield would be a good pick.

Brooke:


Brooke is very hard to cast. She’s absolutely gorgeous, very curvy, very sexy, very audacious looking. I still haven’t quite found the perfect actress for her, but Mila Kunis comes close.

Greg:


Emily’s boyfriend, Greg, is handsome, rich, and dashing. He’s athletic, enjoys golf, and spends a lot of time in suits. I think Tom Welling looks a lot like Greg.

Elliot:

Elliot is Emily’s friend who she becomes closer to as the book progresses. Elliot is a total outdoors guy, he loves being active and out in nature. He has reddish curly hair and is usually a bit scruffy. Emily describes him as being a “total mountain man.” I think Chris Pratt is really cute and would be the perfect Elliot.

Well that was fun! It’s also fun to hear how other people see the characters I write. Do you think I made any huge mistakes in my “casting?” Thanks for having me, Nerissa!

“Hey, look,” our tormentor teases, rising and looking around at everyone.  “She’s so fat she probably broke her wrist by sitting on it!  Little piggy, I think I might just smack you around for the hell of it!”
When she bends back down and grabs Abby’s shoulder, I grab her forearm.  I feel my strength.  I look down at my arm.  My whole body is covered in goose bumps, and the tiny hairs on my neck are standing up.  If I were to look in a mirror right now, I know my eyes would be losing their usual gray color, becoming completely colorless around the black pupils, and glowing a soft white light. This girl is a good seven or eight inches taller than me and has biceps a linebacker would envy, but at this moment, none of that matters.

Her look of amusement flashes to one of anger then confusion.  I release Abby and slowly stand, maintaining my hold on the girl.  Gripping her arm hard, I push her back several steps.  Just like a scene from one of those cheesy 80s high school movies, silence descends in a wave across the cafeteria.

But this girl doesn’t realize yet that she should give up this fight she’s about to lose.  “You little bitch!  I’m gonna—hey!  What are you doin’ to my arm?!”  She wraps her free hand over my own that is still clutching her arm like a vise.  Her whole body starts to shake, and she falls to her knees gripping my hand and trying to pry my fingers off.  I can feel her short, jagged nails raking my hand and forearm, but I know nothing can break the contact.  My mind is screaming to let go while there is still time to salvage this situation, to keep anyone from seeing my eyes, to keep this girl from being seriously hurt, and to keep from appearing as anything other than a typical student in this school.  But my body, my hand, refuse to listen.

MY THOUGHTS:

First, I have to say don’t let the cover fool you; if you’re like me I tend to judge reading a book by the cover which is totally ridiculous but true. I would have completely missed out on a great story if I didn’t stop to read the synopsis. I really wasn’t sure what I was expecting when I started reading this book, this book was definitely one of those books that you pick up to read and it totally surprises you. I was definitely hooked within the first few chapters.

Vivian has always known she was different and has had to hide all of the things she could do, she lives with her Aunt Charlotte since he witnessed her mother’s murder at the age of five.  She’s a good student, good niece and tries to stay out of trouble. But, she finds that she is the prime target of bullying by the “queen of the popular kids” Trista and over the years it has made it hard to control her powers since certain emotions tend to trigger her power.  Her only comfort at school is her best friend
Abby who is ridiculed as much as Vivian is.

Vivian has to deal with the popular group who seriously go out of their way to bully Vivian and Abby. I really felt bad for her; I mean I seriously don’t ever remember school being that divided and if so I don’t remember popular kids tormenting anyone. The characters in this book took bullying to a
whole other level.

I really enjoyed Vivian as the protagonist; does she get bullied around a lot? Yes, but at the end of the day Vivian always tries to stand up for herself when every else just deals with what’s dished out at them.So for that I love her. I think her best friend has an interesting personality,she’s not afraid to stand up for herself but at the same time she’s insecure and sometimes I had no clue what she would do. She was totally random in her actions.  Easton was a character that started growing on me by the end of the book, but I’m not sure I bought the romance;it was just way too fast for me.

I think what grabbed me most in the story was the fact that your taking this journey with Vivian, she’s not sure about all of her abilities and she’s learning what her strengths and weaknesses are along with the reader.I liked the mystery factor of the story surrounding the murder of her mother.

This story definitely left me wanting more, I still have so many unanswered questions, and I just realized book two has been released so I will definitely be grabbing a copy of it. Overall this story definitely was good it was slightly slow starting up for me but then out of nowhere things start happening and it really picked up towards the end, definitely had me wanting more. I would definitely recommend this book if you’re looking for a change from the typical paranormal books out there.

My Thoughts:

I have to say this; I loved the raw and beautiful writing style of the author. Her words were magical and I just wanted to hang on to every word I read and savor it.

Bria Sandoval has just graduated high school and is trying to figure out what she’s going to do with her life; she’s also dealing with having her heart broken. Bria and her two best friends decide that they needed a break and should travel to Europe in the summer before starting college. Her friends end up backing out and Bria finds herself booking a trip with the Global Vagabond Tour group for a three week excursion traveling the ancient Mayan ruins.

This is where Bria’s journey begins, she finds herself traveling to a foreign country alone to prove that she can do things on her own when everyone else doubts her. After the break up, Bria feels as if she has lost her way and what defines her as an individual. She’s trying to figure things out as she travels amongst strangers in Guatemala from city to city.

An unfortunate event introduces Bria to Rowan, a seasoned backpacker who invites her to a party at the island he’s staying at. This is where everything changes for her, she somehow finds herself ditching the Global Vagabond tour group and accompanying Rowan and his sister backpacking city to city.

She’s lost what defines her as a person, she’s lost her love for art and everything she holds dear to herself. This book was so much more than just a book about a girl traveling it’s about finding yourself and that things happen for a reason although you might not necessarily know what they are at the time. It’s about discovery and learning that you can overcome even what seems to be the hardest thing to deal with in your life at the time.

After reading this book, I wanted to do two things;

a.       Pick up a backpack and go backpacking across Central America, even though I'm definitely not in my twenty's anymore.

b.      I felt inspired to do something more, to not give up on something that I might love just because the circumstances aren’t right.

I absolutely adored this story; there was so much in the back story. The descriptions of her travels were beautiful and captivating. When Bria described locations I wanted to reach out and touch it, I wanted to take a deep breath and smell the air that she talked about. The author definitely has a way with words and painted the most beautiful story.

This book deserves 5 out of 5 stars.
