August Reading Goals

Seriously, I think I fell down the rabbit’s hole last month. I found myself burned out and I didn’t feel like reading, blogging, or anything else for that matter. I think I read a total of 4 books for the month. Do you ever feel like that? What do you do to get out of the hole?

Anyways, since today is a new month (new beginning). I’ve decided that I’m going to set a reading goal and try to stick to it. Other than two weekend trips I’m taking this month, things should be fairly quiet in my world.

Below is a list of books I would love to actually get around to reading, in no particular order.

Divergent (Divergent, #1) Beatrice "Tris" Prior has reached the fateful age of sixteen, the stage at which teenagers in Veronica Roth's dystopian Chicago must select which of five factions to join for life. Each faction represents a virtue: Candor, Abnegation, Dauntless, Amity, and Erudite. To the surprise of herself and her selfless Abnegation family, she chooses Dauntless, the path of courage. Her choice exposes her to the demanding, violent initiation rites of this group, but it also threatens to expose a personal secret that could place in mortal danger. Veronica Roth's young adult Divergent trilogy launches with a captivating adventure about love and loyalty playing out under most extreme circumstances. ~Goodreads Synopsis

Summer FriendsIn this compelling novel set against the beautiful backdrop of Ogunquit, Maine, the bestselling author of Tuscan Holiday and One Week in December portrays an unexpected friendship, and its consequences for two very different women as time inevitably sweeps them into adulthood. . .
Over the course of one eventful summer, nine-year-old native Mainer Delphine Crandall and Maggie Weldon, a privileged girl "from away," become best friends. Despite the social gulf between them, their bond is strengthened during vacations spent rambling around Ogunquit's beaches and quiet country lanes, and lasts throughout their college years in Boston. It seems nothing can separate them, yet after graduation, Delphine and Maggie slowly drift in different directions. . .
With her MBA, Maggie acquires a lucrative career, and eventually marries. Delphine is drawn back home, her life steeped in family and the Maine community she loves. Twenty years pass, until one summer, Maggie announces she's returning to Ogunquit to pay an extended visit. And for the first time, the friends are drawn to reflect on their choices and compromises, the girls they were and the women they've become, the promises kept and broken—and the deep, lasting ties that even time can never quite wash away. . .~Goodreads Synopsis

Succubus Revealed (Georgina Kincaid, #6) In Georgina Kincaid, succubus and she-demon, #1 New York Times bestselling author Richelle Mead has created one of her most enticing characters. But with a shot at love, and maybe even redemption, is the ultimate seductress finally going soft? Like hell she is. . .
Georgina Kincaid has had an eternity to figure out the opposite sex, but sometimes they still surprise her. Take Seth Mortensen. The man has risked his soul to become Georgina's boyfriend. Still, with Lucifer for a boss, Georgina can't just hang up her killer heels and settle down to domestic bliss. In fact, she's being forced to transfer operations. . .to Las Vegas.
The City of Sin is a dream gig for a succubus, but Georgina's allies are suspicious. Why are the powers-that-be so eager to get her away from Seattle—and from Seth? Georgina is one of Hell's most valuable assets, but if there's any way out of the succubus business she plans to take it—no matter how much roadkill she leaves behind. She just hopes the casualties won't include the one man she's risking everything for. . .~Goodreads Synopsis

HushCross Your Heart
In the summer before their senior year, Coby Rendell and her friends take a beach trip together. Around a campfire on a foggy June night, Coby, Rhiannon, Yvette and the others share their darkest secrets, before a tragic accident shatters the bond between them . . .
And Hope
Twelve years later Coby attends a birthday party reunion that ends in horror when Yvette's sister's lifeless body is discovered in a hot tub. Soon others in the original group of tale-tellers begin meeting similar fates-unfortunate "accidents" shrinking their numbers one by one . . .
To Die
Conflicted by her growing feelings for Danner Lockwood, the investigating detective, Coby races to unravel a mystery buried in the past. But someone is watching her every move-someone prepared to kill again and again to protect a shocking truth.~Goodreads Synopsis

The Unbecoming of Mara DyerMara Dyer doesn't think life can get any stranger than waking up in a hospital with no memory of how she got there.
It can.
She believes there must be more to the accident she can't remember that killed her friends and left her mysteriously unharmed.
There is.
She doesn't believe that after everything she's been through, she can fall in love.
She's wrong. ~Goodreads Synopsis

The Near WitchThe Near Witch is only an old story told to frighten children.

If the wind calls at night, you must not listen. The wind is lonely, and always looking for company.

And there are no strangers in the town of Near.
These are the truths that Lexi has heard all her life.
But when an actual stranger—a boy who seems to fade like smoke—appears outside her home on the moor at night, she knows that at least one of these sayings is no longer true.
The next night, the children of Near start disappearing from their beds, and the mysterious boy falls under suspicion. Still, he insists on helping Lexi search for them. Something tells her she can trust him.
As the hunt for the children intensifies, so does Lexi’s need to know—about the witch that just might be more than a bedtime story, about the wind that seems to speak through the walls at night, and about the history of this nameless boy.
Part fairy tale, part love story, Victoria Schwab’s debut novel is entirely original yet achingly familiar: a song you heard long ago, a whisper carried by the wind, and a dream you won’t soon forget. ~Goodreads Synopsis

Do you set a reading goal for yourself every month? How do you tackle your reading pile?

  1. Hey Neri. Four books a month is pretty good in my books! I don't think I'd be able to read many more. It's so hard to juggle reading with all the other commitments. Sometimes real life just gets in the way. I think setting yourself goals is a great idea. Just don't beat yourself up too much if you don't meet them :)

  2. oh this is a great list of books. . I am curious about how much ... is in the Richelle Mead book. She's a great author! Looking forward to your reviews.

In May I only read 2 books! Sometimes you just need a break. I think as bloggers we sometimes base what we do or how much we read on what other bloggers do. But I don't have the ability to read 22 books in a month when I am not home most nights before 8. So set expectations based on what works best for you! And we will keep commenting!!

Thanks for the twitter conversation last night! It was so much fun!!

  3. I've definitely been in a reading slump before, and I hate it when that happens!

You've got a great list of books here! I'm hoping to get to Divergent soon. I've heard so many great things about it. :) Mara Dyer is AMAZING! I hope you enjoy it!

  4. @Lan- Thanks! I figured maybe setting a goal will actually push me to read more. But, I understand what you mean that it's hard finding time to read. I have that issue too! I work full time and have two rugrats that command my attention :)

@Namine- I love Richelle Mead's books, she is one of my favorite author's. Thank you for the advice. I totally agree that sometimes I push myself to set expectations that aren't realistic because I try to compare myself to other bloggers. :( *sigh maybe I'll learn one day.

@Christy- Thanks! I'm excited about Mara Dyer and Divergent, I've heard so many great things about them. Reading slumps are definitely no fun :(
